You don't want to feel rushed, especially if it's your first trip with your little one. You know what works for you. So, give yourself plenty of time to load and unload your luggage, stroller, car seat and diaper bag (and don't forget the pump parts)! Remember most airlines will not charge you to check car seats or a stroller. However, if you have a tight connection you may want to gate check your car seat to make sure it arrives when you do. If for some reason your car seat gets lost, you can check with rental car companies to see if they have one available to rent.
Can I travel with breastmilk or formula?
Yes! Formula, breast milk, toddler drinks, and baby/toddler foods (including puree pouches) are considered medically necessary liquids, according to the Transportation Security Administration. So, that means even if they’re more than 3.4 ounces, they are allowed in your carry-on bags. They do not need to fit in a quart-sized bag. This rule also applies to ice packs, freezer packs, and gel packs whether or not there is breast milk. If they’re partially frozen or slushy, they will have to go through a screening. Your baby does NOT need to be with you to bring breast milk, formula or other related items.
What should I know before going through security?
First up, give yourself some extra time to get through security (especially if this is the first time you and your baby are taking a trip to the airport). If possible, put your formula and breast milk in clear, translucent bottles instead of plastic bags or pouches. Plastic bags or pouches may not be able to be screened by Bottle Liquid Scanners, so you may have to open them. Agents will not put anything into the medically necessary liquid (which both are considered to be). Tell the TSA agents you are carrying formula, breast milk, toddler drinks, and baby/toddler food (including those puree pouches) and that it’s more than 3.4 ounces. Take all of these items out of your bag. They’ll be screened separately from your other items.
Can I pump or nurse in the terminal?
Yes! You can pump or nurse anywhere you want! It's your right! However, if you're looking for a place that is more private, many airports (depending on their size) provide a private, non-bathroom space in each terminal building for you to pump breast milk. You can visit the airport's directory map to find the locations of these pumping spaces (some may also look like pods placed throughout the terminal).
Can I board early with my baby?
Yes, on most airlines you can board early with your child through family boarding. That means you can get on the plane, head to your seat and get situated before most other passengers. When you get to your gate ask the agent when they offer family boarding because it varies by airline. The extra time can be really helpful and allow you and your child to get comfortable before take off. Many airlines offer this option for free and for those traveling with children under the age of 5.
Any tips for breastfeeding on the plane?
When I was flying with my little ones I would typically nurse them when we started to taxi away from the gate and many times they fell asleep quickly. It was comforting to them and helped them relax after the rush of getting through the airport. Nursing during takeoff and landing can also help protect your child from ear pain due to cabin pressure changes. I also kept our little ones in a sling or carrier while we were flying. It helped them feel safe, secure and they could nurse on demand.
What do I need to know about pumping on the plane?
If you'll be pumping midair, plan ahead. You can switch to a manual pump for your trip or a battery powered breast pump. Some planes have power outlets at your seat so you may be able to use that power source as well while flying.
If you pump while flying, make sure your ready to transport and store your milk. The CDC notes that "you can carry freshly expressed milk in an insulated cooler bag with frozen ice packs for up to 24 hours. After arriving at your destination, use the milk right away, store it in the refrigerator, or freeze it."
See their full recommendations here.
How should I store my breastmilk while traveling?
Check with your hotel or vacation rental to make sure they have what you need to store your milk. Some hotels will provide a compact fridge to your room if you request one. Keep in mind, it's best to store milk in the back of the refrigerator or freezer where the temperature is more likely to stay constant.
"Dressing room diary" blog posts are the BEST! They give you an even better idea of how the clothes will look and fit (without any professional cameras/ models) along with ideas on how to style them to help make life easier!
First up, our recently released nursing tunic tops. They come in three colors and wash great! They are the perfect length with leggings. I'm only 5'1 so I think they look best with leggings, but they also look great with jeans (I just need a little heel)!
Fit Tip: I'm 5'1, size 2, 34C. The nursing tunics run a little big (wearing XS but could have sized down to XXS). If between sizes, size down. I always size up for Lulu leggings (wearing size 4) and I always size down for Wit & Wisdom jeans (wearing size 0) and TTS for shoes (wearing 5.5).

]]>Spectra S1 Plus
The Spectra S1 Plus was the clear winner.
According to Spectra's website:
"The Spectra® S1 Plus Premier Rechargeable double electric breast pump provides all the features of the S2 Plus, but with a built-in battery. This means that you are now able to benefit from the efficiency, power, and performance of a hospital-strength breast pump without compromising on portability."
Amy commented that she likes both the Spectra S1 and S2.
"Spectra S1/S2 is still a favorite. It's very reliable, quiet and does a great job," she posted.
Jessica agreed, "Spectra S1/S2. Prefer the blue portable one. But with the freemie cups!!! Hands free and pop into any nursing bra! Was so much easier to get work done while pumping with them!! Loved how quiet and portable my Elvie was, but no where near as good a pump as my spectra."
Rachel said, "Baby buddha! Between the regular flanges and the wearable cups, and high suction it's the best! Their Facebook group is extremely helpful for trouble shooting hacks with other brands pieces as well!"
Elvie Pump
The third top mentioned breast pump was the Elvie.
According to the Elvie website:
"Elvie Pump is smaller, quieter, and smarter than any other breast pump. Plus, our new SmartRhythm™ settings allow you to customize your suction with four different rhythm options, tailoring the pump to your unique requirements and helping you to optimize your milk output."
Sarah said, "I loved the convenience of my elvie pump, it's the only thing I used with my second. I had a spectra with my first and really liked it as well but I ended up liking the elvie more."
Jessica said, "Spectra as my main pump and my Elvie original was a game changer for me as a wearable when I went out."
There were many other brands that moms recommended including the Willow, Pumpables Genie Advanced, Spectra 2 and Momcozy. What are your favorites?

Silver Nursing Cups
If you haven’t heard of these - you’ll thank us later! These special protective nursing cups help heal and prevent cuts, wounds, cracks, soreness and infections. They’re also really great for those who are dealing with cracked nursing nipples. They’re easy to clean, too. You can start using them right away and they won’t change the taste or smell of breast milk.
Nipple Balm
A nipple balm or cream is always a great stocking stuffer. It’s great to find one that also works with pump flanges! When choosing one, think about what’s in the cream. Does it have a strong smell? What about the texture? Read some of the reviews - or stock up on her favorite brand!
Nursing Pajamas
Having something comfy and cozy to relax at night and sleep in is so important. Plus, it feels a little luxurious when you may not actually feel that way. Our high-quality pajamas are key to adjusting to feeding schedules too. Nursing Queen uses lightweight and breathable fabric that is comfortable and has minimal show-through. Of course, they allow for easy access with each feeding.
Breastfeeding Gift Basket
If it’s difficult to choose between a few things, put together a beautiful basket with the essentials: nipple cream, nursing pads, water bottle, ChapStick, her favorite snacks and lactation tea. She’ll be able to pick and choose some of the goodies as she needs.
Gift Basket
Breastfeeding is an exhausting process, so if she gets a few moments alone, why not help her pamper herself? Put together a spa basket with lotion, bath bombs, scrubs, face masks and slippers. She may not be able to go to a spa right now, but you can give her the next best option.
Breastfeeding is one of the most challenging parts of being a new mom. Giving her items that will make her feel better - and feel loved - is the perfect way to show her that you support her while also making her feel special.
What items would you suggest as gifts or stocking stuffers for breastfeeding moms?
]]>Tip 1: Pack and organize your car
You should have seen what the trunk looked like the first time we took a three hour road trip from Tampa to Miami with our newborn! We had the stroller, pack and play, nursing pillow, pumps, blackout curtains. Everything you could imagine. Don't be afraid to bring things you need for your trip, but also don't overthink it like I did.
Pack the essentials for nursing. If you're pumping that means start with all your pump parts. There are several bags, like these bags from our friends at Be My Breast Friend that can help you organize those parts.
-Pump parts
-Containers to store milk (and something to label them with the date)
-Nursing pillow
-Water bottle
-Snacks
-Breastfeeding friendly clothes
Our Nursing Queen sweatshirts allow for easy access to pump or nurse on the go. You can open the zipper as far or little as you want.
Tip 2: Storage for your milk
If you plan to pump along the way, make sure you figure out how you want to store your breastmilk. According to the CDC, freshly expressed or pumped breastmilk can be kept at room temperature for up to four hours. If you'll be traveling longer than that, you'll want to look at bringing a small cooler with ice packs to keep your breastmilk cold. The CDC notes that "breast milk can be stored in an insulated cooler with frozen ice packs for up to 24 hours when you are traveling. At your destination, use the milk right away, store it in the refrigerator, or freeze it."
Click here to look at the full guidelines from the CDC when it comes to storing your milk on the go.
Tip 3: Take care of YOU!
Those snacks and water bottle we told you to bring - use them! It is so important to stay hydrated and keep your supply up.
Tip 4: Plan your stop options ahead of time
As you map out your road trip, look for places along the way to stop. If you can, keep to the baby's schedule and try to pullover around the time when he or she normally feeds. This will help make sure your child doesn't get too hungry (and thus fussy) in the car. If you're pumping, keep your normal routine to help your breasts from becoming engorged.
Tip 5: Find a place to pull over where you feel comfortable to nurse
You may choose to pull over and nurse or pump in your car. Or, maybe you could find a place you feel comfortable inside a restaurant or at the park. Keep in mind there are breastfeeding laws in all 50 states to protect your right to feed your baby anywhere at any time -- covered or uncovered. That includes public or private locations.
Can I travel with breastmilk or formula?
Yes! Formula, breast milk, toddler drinks, and baby/toddler foods (including puree pouches) are considered medically necessary liquids, according to the Transportation Security Administration. ]]>I’m Sick. Do I Keep Breastfeeding?
Being a new mom is hard enough, but being a new mom and not feeling well is ten times harder. You want to fully be present and continue doing your super-mom routine, but it’s difficult. Be sure to care for yourself during this time. If you are feeling sick, have a fever, call your doctor to get treated and diagnosed.
You can and should continue breastfeeding. This is the case if you have the flu, COVID-19, diarrhea, or a breast infection like mastitis. When you’re talking with your doctor, let them know you are breastfeeding. It’s important because most medicines are safe to take while breastfeeding, but some may not be recommended. Medications like: Afrin nasal spray, Kenalog shot, Robitussin DM, or Imodium could be a risk to your baby, or to your milk production.
Your body will keep producing milk when you’re sick. You should make sure you’re getting plenty of rest and stay hydrated. Now, if you have to stop breastfeeding, talk with your lactation specialist about how you can keep your milk supply up.
My Baby Is Sick. Do I Keep Breastfeeding?
Seeing our little ones sick is so heartbreaking. But it should comfort you to know, breastfeeding can provide comfort and help keep your baby hydrated. It also boosts your baby’s immune system. Through breastfeeding, your antibodies are given to your baby, which then helps them fight infections.
What’s also incredible is that your breast milk changes when your baby is sick. Your body will make antibodies to combat it and the amount of leukocytes, those good immunity-boosting cells, will increase to help them fight off the illness.
What may get difficult is how your baby eats while they’re sick. They may want to feed more often, but for a shorter time. This could be because it’s comforting or because their little nose is plugged. If that’s the case, try out some different positions to help them out.
It might get frustrating, but stay confident that you’re doing the right thing for your baby, just like you do, every single day.
Did You Know?
As we head into a month dedicated to honoring breastfeeding, we found a couple interesting facts for you:
- Breastfeeding burns between 500 to 600 calories a day. This would be equal to running for 40 minutes at a 12-minute mile pace.
- If you breastfeed for one year that's about 1,800 hours. Think about this: a full-time job with 3 weeks vacation is 1,960 hours.
- The size of your breasts has nothing to do with how much you make. A woman with small breasts could produce more than a mom with large breasts.
- When you breastfeed, your brain releases prolactin and oxytocin, which help you bond with your baby. These hormones also ease feelings of stress and anxiety.
World Breastfeeding Week
Each year, between August 1 and August 7, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action organizes World Breastfeeding Week. WBW is a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness and sparking conversation and change around breastfeeding. It takes on important topics and this year is no different. The focus for 2023 is on breastfeeding and employment and work.
The week will focus on things like adequate maternity/paternity leave, workplace support, and from parents themselves about this important conversation. During this time, the campaign will focus on creating change through governments, policymakers, and the workplace itself. It will also strive to empower parents to have their voices heard to create breastfeeding-friendly environments.
The UNICEF Executive Director and WHO Director General, gave a joint statement on World Breastfeeding Week:
“Supportive workplaces are key. Evidence shows that while breastfeeding rates drop significantly for women when they return to work, that negative impact can be reversed when workplaces facilitate mothers to continue to breastfeed their babies.
Family-friendly workplace policies - such as paid maternity leave, breastfeeding breaks, and a room where mothers can breastfeed or express milk - create an environment that benefits not only working women and their families but also employers. These policies generate economic returns by reducing maternity-related absenteeism, increasing the retention of female workers, and reducing the costs of hiring and training new staff.”
There are ways you can get involved, check out the World Breastfeeding Week website for more information.
National Breastfeeding Month
August also marks National Breastfeeding Month. The U.S. Breastfeeding Committee made it official in August of 2011 with the goal of creating action and conversation about policy and practice changes that need to take place to support mothers and their children and families.
The theme in 2023 is “This Is Our Why.” The idea behind it is to focus on why this is so important and the families that need the most support. There are ways you can get involved by contacting your members of Congress to get them to support comprehensive and permanent paid leave, to increasing funding for breastfeeding programs. You can also share your story about why breastfeeding is important to you and who or what made a difference in your time breastfeeding.
Each week this year the month is broken down into themes:
August 1 - 7: World Breastfeeding Week
August 8 - 14: Indigenous Milk Medicine Week
August 15 - 21: Asian American Native and Pacific Islander Breastfeeding Week
August 25 - 31: Black Breastfeeding Week
September 5 - 11: Semana de La Lactancia Latina
While this is a lot of information, hopefully you can find ways to connect with moms who are going through the same daily challenges that you are. There are lots of ways to follow along on social media and support organizations and groups around you. This is a way to bring awareness to something we care about and think about every single day of the year.
]]>What Is Cronobacter Sakazakii?
The CDC says Cronobacter sakazakii is a germ found naturally in the environment. It can live in dry foods like powdered infant formula, powdered milk, herbal teas, and starches. It can also be found in contaminated feeding items like breast pump equipment.
How Does It Impact My Baby?
Infections from Cronobacter are extremely rare, but it can be deadly, especially for babies younger than two months or those born prematurely. There are about two to four reports to the CDC every year about infants infected with Cronobacter. So, yes, it is extremely rare. But most hospitals and labs aren’t required to report it to health departments. The germs can cause sepsis or meningitis. The illness usually shows up as a fever and poor feeding, excessive crying, or low energy. Seizures can also be a symptom. If your baby has any of these symptoms take them to your doctor as soon as you can.
Where Does Cronobacter Come From?
In your home, you can accidentally get Cronobacter in powdered formula after you open it. It can live on your kitchen counters or sinks, and in your water. If you put the formula lid or scoop on a surface that’s contaminated, when it touches the formula, it’s contaminated. It also could get mixed into the formula when you mix it with contaminated water or a contaminated bottle. The same is true for a processing facility. It can get into powdered formula if the manufacturer uses contaminated ingredients or if the formula powder touches a contaminated surface.
How Can I Protect My Baby?
Breastfeeding is the best way to protect your baby because very few infections have been reported from infants who only get breast milk. However, we know that’s not always possible. Make sure to clean, sanitize, and store your feeding items safely. These are things like baby bottles, breast pump parts, nipples, caps, rings, valves, pacifiers, and teethers. If you simply rinse your bottle and then add breast milk or formula, germs can grow quickly. Be sure to wipe down countertops and sinks with soap and water or a cleaning product. It’s also smart to keep feeding items out of the sink since germs can also contaminate them. Keep your hands clean too. Soap and water is best before you touch your baby’s mouth, their pacifier or before and after changing a diaper. You can also use hand sanitizer as long as it has at least 60% alcohol.
Preparing And Storing Formula Safely
Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the container when using powdered infant formula. If your baby is at higher risk, there are a few extra steps you should take. Be sure to mix the formula while the water is still very hot so it kills germs. Be sure to use a clean bottle. Add the exact amount listed on the container. Don’t use a different utensil, be sure to use that scoop and keep it off of surfaces. Cool the formula to body temperature so it’s not too hot for your baby. Use the infant formula within an hour from the start of feeding and within two hours of preparing it. If your baby doesn’t finish the formula, throw it away. It’s not a good idea to refrigerate it and save it for later, it could allow germs to grow. That being said, if you don’t plan to feed your baby right after you’ve made the formula, put it in the fridge immediately and then use it within 24 hours. If you can’t remember how long it’s been in there, throw it out. The CDC has an entire section dedicated to safe preparation and storage. As always, if you have questions, talk to your doctor. It’s always better to be safe.
What Are My Rights?
Women are protected around the country. All 50 states are covered under a federal law that protects women’s rights to pump breast milk at work. Under The Fair Labor Standards Act, employers must provide reasonable break time for an employee to express breast milk for their nursing child for one year after the child's birth each time such employee has need to do so. Employees must also have have a place to pump at work, other than a restroom, that keeps them out of view and from being interrupted from other coworkers or the public.
In December 2022, President Biden signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act into law. It includes the PUMP Act, which gives more nursing employees the rights to have time to pump and a private place to do so at their place of work.
New York Is Expanding Its Laws
Employers in New York already have to have a lactation room or location close to the work area for nursing moms. But under this new state aw, employers must also provide a location that’s well lit, shielded from view, and a space where others won’t interrupt. It specifically states it cannot be a restroom or toilet stall.
This location must also include a chair, working surface, access to clean, running water, and electricity. If the building has refrigeration, employees must be allowed to store pumped milk.
Under this amended law, employers must adopt a lactation accommodation policy. Each year, the company is required to give it to employees, give it to an employee when they’re hired and provide it to women when they return from maternity leave. The policy has to let employees know their rights as well as the requirement that employers respond to an employee’s request for a room or location to express milk within five business days.
If you feel that your requests or needs are not being met, you can file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Labor. You cannot be punished or retaliated against for exercising your rights or filing a complaint.
]]>The short answer is YES you can take your breast milk, formula, and juice through security. Here are a few things to keep in mind from the Transportation Security Administration to help make your trip a little less stressful.
Prepping Your Bag
Formula, breast milk, toddler drinks, and baby/toddler foods (including puree pouches) are considered medically necessary liquids. So, that means if they’re more than 3.4 ounces they are allowed in your carry-on bags. They do not need to fit in a quart-sized bag. This rule also applies to ice packs, freezer packs, and gel packs whether or not there is breast milk. If they’re partially frozen or slushy, they will have to go through a screening.
Something to keep in mind: Your baby does not need to be with you to bring breast milk, formula or other related items.
If you’d like the screening process to go a little quicker, (because who likes waiting in security?) you can put your formula and breast milk in clear, translucent bottles instead of plastic bags or pouches. Plastic bags or pouches may not be able to be screened by Bottle Liquid Scanners, so you may have to open them. However, agents will not put anything into the medically necessary liquid (which both are considered to be).
Talk To TSA
When you get to security, tell the TSA agents you are carrying formula, breast milk, toddler drinks, and baby/toddler food (including those puree pouches) and that it’s more than 3.4 ounces. Take all of these items out of your bag. They’ll be screened separately from your other items. TSA agents may have to test them.
X-Ray Screening
Now that you’re getting ready to head through security, we want to let you know that there are no known negative effects of sending your items through the x-ray machines. But if you do not want your items to be x-rayed or opened, let the TSA agent know. This will mean you’ll go through additional steps to screen the liquid.
Safe Travels
If this is your first time traveling with your baby, give yourself some extra time to get through security. We can’t always predict the lines, how your baby will react to the different environments, or who you may be standing next to in line. Having extra time so you’re not stressed about the process or cutting it close and missing your flight will make it much less overwhelming.
If you need special accommodations at the airport, or maybe you’re still concerned with the screening process, you can contact TSA Cares online here or (855) 787-2227.

]]>As your baby grows, they will go longer between feedings. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, newborns eat every 2 to 3 hours (or 8 to 12 times every 24 hours). At about 2 months, that increases to usually 4 to 5 ounces a feeding every 3 to 4 hours. At 4 months, babies usually take 4 to 6 ounces. At 6 months, a baby takes up to 8 ounces every 4 to 5 hours.
Since we’re exhausted and longing for more sleep, a dream feed could get you a few more hours, and who doesn’t love the sound of that?
What Is A Dream Feed?
A dream feed is when you feed your baby one more time before you go to sleep. You don’t completely wake them up, just wake them enough to eat. Research shows that having that extra feeding between 10:00 p.m. and midnight will reduce the chances your baby wakes up hungry in the middle of the night.
The term “dream feed” was first coined by author and baby expert, Tracy Hogg. She wrote the book Secrets of the Baby Whisperer and changed the way parents communicated with their babies. Since she first wrote about it, the method hasn’t changed much. There have also been studies to look at this kind of sleep pattern in infants. While there are studies and books and blogs about the topic, the best way to really know if it works, is to give it a try!
How To Dream Feed
You know the old adage, "Never wake a sleeping baby", so let’s stick to that! You won’t need to completely wake your baby for this. The idea is to make sure your baby doesn’t have a hungry belly and gets into a sleep pattern with you.
Begin by putting your baby to bed as you normally would. Then a few hours later, when you are getting ready to go to bed, take them out of their bassinet or crib. The ideal time for this is during REM sleep. This is when you’ll notice their eyes fluttering or they’re making soft noises. There’s no need to take them out of their swaddle if they're in one.
Gently place your breast or the bottle near the baby’s lips. You could start with their cheek. Don’t force it, and wait for them to latch. Feed them until they are finished. Try for 5 to 10 minutes on each side, or three ounces if they’re bottle-fed.
When they’re finished, burp your baby as you normally would and then head to bed.
How Long Should You Dream Feed?
There’s no specific age recommendation to stop dream feeding. You’ll have to gauge that based on how your baby is responding. This isn’t meant to be a permanent solution to your baby’s sleep schedule. You may only use it for a few weeks until your baby naturally sleeps for longer stretches.
If it’s working for you, continue as long as you want. By 4 to 6 months, babies are able to sleep more than 3 to 4 hours at a time without eating. So at that point, you could begin to skip the dream feed to see if your baby will naturally sleep a longer stretch without it.
Do What’s Best For Your Baby
All babies are different so do what works for you. If you try dream feeding a couple of times and it doesn’t seem to be what your baby needs, it’s okay. Always consult with your pediatrician if you have questions about how much sleep or food your baby is getting. They may not need that feeding and can sleep soundly without it. Or maybe you need to increase how much they’re getting during the day. Having these conversations with your pediatrician will get you on a schedule that works for you. You know your baby better than anyone, so you’ll know what’s best for them!
]]>I gave birth to my son in May 2020 at the height of COVID and I couldn’t breastfeed. He had a tongue tie and still didn’t latch, even after it was cut. The same thing happened with my daughter who was born two years later.
I felt like I was missing out or that I was incompetent. However, due to what was going on in the world, I was motivated to give him as much immune support as I could. That kept me going when I was pumping eight times a day for about 30 minutes at a time - one being a power pump.
Pumping is painful, time consuming, frustrating and takes away from things that you’d rather be doing. It’s also emotionally draining. I'd ask myself questions like, "Would I be able to bond with my babies if I were exclusively pumping (the answer is YES by the way!)?" So I did my research and found pumps that worked for me and made the process a bit easier. Hopefully this can help you, too!
I chose my first pump based on a recommendation from my sister. There are many pumps that are free with insurance, but the Spectra S1 was a $75 upgrade because it was wireless. It came with a rechargeable battery so it didn’t have to be plugged into the wall. It allowed me to be able to walk around but I still had to carry the pump. There were times I put the pump inside a tote and hung it over my shoulder so I could be hands-free to wash dishes, or even get my newborn out of his bassinet. The only annoyance was that sometimes the tubing would get caught as I moved and the flange would rip off my breasts. This pump is the gentlest on my nipples.
After a few months, I decided to look for a true hands-free pump and tried the Freemie because it was one of the cheapest options. The pump is tiny and fits on the waistband of your jeans, scrubs or yoga pants. It has a little less output, so I did have to pump longer. This is what I used when I went back to work. It’s quiet, but audible. It would sometimes get caught and disconnect, but the flange stayed on.
With my second baby, I went all out for convenience! I knew what I was getting into this time, so I wanted it to be as easy as possible. I wanted to be completely hands-free and tube-free with fewer parts to wash. With the Willow 3.0 I can wash the dishes and pick up my kids and nothing gets caught. I can even wear them while driving. They’re also nice when I have family or friends around because I'm completely covered. The only downside is that it's very heavy so get a supportive bra! The suction is very powerful, so it’s rougher on my nipples than my other pumps. So much so, it cracks then. Due to this, every now and then I’ll give them a break and go with the Spectra. Another con is that if you’re someone who really has to squeeze and massage your breasts, this pump makes that more difficult because your breasts are covered.
Pro tips:
– There are many websites that can help you get a pump for free, but make sure it’s in-network with your insurance. You may end up paying more for your pump if it’s not in-network with your insurance. Your doctor’s office will also be able to give you a website that can help you with this process.
– Once you pick your pump, see what it’s compatible with. For example, Avent bottles will twist on to your Spectra pump. So it’s good to have the Avent hand pump so your bottles are interchangeable. Otherwise you’ll be like me, with a Lansinoh hand pump and only one bottle that fits it and tons of Avent bottles sitting in the cupboard.
– A hand pump comes in handy. One day I forgot the duckbills and I couldn’t figure out why my pump wasn’t working. Thank goodness I had my hand pump. It goes everywhere with me, just in case.
– Get sterling silver nipple shields. They’re fantastic because they protect your nipples from rubbing on your bra. I’ll say my nipples are way less sore and painful than the first time around when I didn’t know about these gems yet!
– Girl, buy the cleaning and sanitizing spray for your pump parts.
– Don’t waste money on the fancy lube for the flanges or your nipples. Coconut oil is perfect.
– To save time and get more rest, pump while feeding your baby in the middle of the night.
-Make sure your wireless pump is charged because it's frustrating to grab your pump and it's dead!
I think the most important advice in choosing a breast pump: if you’re breastfeeding and you need to pump on occasion, the Spectra works great. However, if you are an exclusive pumper, or need to continue working or get stuff done while you're pumping, hands-free is the way to go!
Yes, it’s frustrating, exhausting, time consuming and painful, but it’s worth it. When you feel like you are at your wits end, take a deep breath and remember why you’re doing it. Right now you may want to cry, but I promise you, one day you’ll look back and be so proud of what you did for your baby!
]]>1.) Is breastfeeding protected by law?
Yes, there are breastfeeding laws in all 50 States. They protect your right to feed your baby anywhere at any time -- covered or uncovered. That includes public or private locations. If you would like to find your state’s breastfeeding laws, this link is an excellent place to start.
2.) Do I need a special swimsuit to breastfeed in public?
Nursing swimsuits are convenient, but not necessary. You can always use what you have! However, breastfeeding specific swimwear can offer easy nursing access and some bonus coverage. Nursing Queen’s nursing swimsuits feature a lift up front for fast and simple breastfeeding.
3.) Do I need to use a nursing cover?
No, you are not required to cover while breastfeeding. Nursing specific swimwear often offers coverage if that is something that you are directly seeking. Do what makes you and your baby comfortable! We support you covered or uncovered.
4.) What if someone asks me to “go to the bathroom” or breastfeed elsewhere?
Offering education about these policies can diffuse many situations. You do not need to leave. The law is on your side, Mama. Every summer there are stories of families who have experienced harassment for breastfeeding openly. Knowledge and education of these laws are crucial. We encourage you to search for your state’s breastfeeding laws and codes. Take a screenshot of them with your phone. If you are planning to travel, do an inquiry of those breastfeeding laws too. Some states and countries offer a higher level of protection than others!
The big question: Can I bring breastmilk, formula or juices with me through security? Yes, you can! Here is a step-by-step guide from the TSA about what you need to do:
Notify the TSA Officer
Formula, breast milk and juice for infants or toddlers are permitted in reasonable quantities through the security checkpoint. Remove these items from your carry-on bag to be screened separately from the rest of your belongings.
Inform the TSA officer at the beginning of the screening process that you carry formula, breast milk and juice in excess of 3.4 ounces in your carry-on bag. These liquids are typically screened by X-ray.
Screening Formula, Breast Milk and Juice
TSA officers may need to test liquids for explosives or concealed prohibited items. Officers may ask you to open the container and/or have you transfer a small quantity of the liquid to a separate empty container or dispose of a small quantity, if feasible.
Inform the TSA officer if you do not want the formula, breast milk and/or juice to be X-rayed or opened. Additional steps will be taken to clear the liquid and you or the traveling guardian will undergo additional screening procedures, to include a pat-down and screening of other carry-on property.
X-ray Screening
The Food and Drug Administration states that there are no known adverse effects from eating food, drinking beverages and using medicine screened by X-ray.
3-1-1 Liquids Rule Exemption
Formula, breast milk, juice in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters are allowed in carry-on baggage and do not need to fit within a quart-sized bag. Remove these items from your carry-on bag to be screened separately from the rest of your belongings. You do not need to travel with your child to bring breast milk. Breast milk and formula are considered medically necessary liquids. This also applies to breast milk pumping equipment (regardless of presence of breast milk).
Ice packs, freezer packs, frozen gel packs and other accessories required to cool formula, breast milk and juice – regardless of the presence of breast milk —are allowed in carry-on. If these accessories are partially frozen or slushy, they are subject to the same screening as described above. You may also bring gel or liquid-filled teethers, canned, jarred and processed baby food in carry-on baggage. These items may be subject to additional screening.
Here is a link to the TSA's website with more info.
]]>While we’ve learned the Biden Administration is shipping more than 44,000 pounds this week, we know there are families out there struggling and as moms we always want to help.
Have you considered donating your breast milk? Some mamas produce more milk than their baby needs and instead of dumping it, they donate it! By doing so, you can help other moms out who may have to supplement because they don’t produce enough.
The process is relatively easy. Start with a search for a milk bank in your local area. Milk banks connect milk donors and milk recipients. You can also talk to your doctor about whether they know of a mother in need of breast milk.
Yes, there are eligibility requirements. Be prepared to answer a lot of questions about your health. We went to WebMD to learn about who can and can’t donate.
You CAN donate if:
-You’re in good overall health
-Have breast milk in excess
-Can freeze your breast milk within 24-48 hours of pumping
-Only use medications that are approved for donors
-Meet other minimum requirements of your milk bank
-Aren’t using herbal supplements
You CANNOT donate if:
-You’ve been or are being treated for HIV, HTLV (human T-cell leukemia virus), hepatitis B or C, or syphilis
-Have a sexual partner who is at risk for HIV, HTLV, hepatitis B or C, or syphilis
-Have used recreational drugs within the last year
-Smoke or use other tobacco products
-Drink more than specified amount of alcohol
-Have recently traveled to certain countries
Here come the steps: You’ll have to fill out an application, possibly give blood work or medical records and you may have to have your pediatrician sign off to confirm you’re breastfeeding. This seems like a lot of paperwork, but remember how helpful this will be in the end.
After you’ve made it through the application process, next comes prepping/donating. Maybe we’re tired and don’t do these things all the time, but in this case, it’s important so your milk isn’t contaminated. You’ll need to sterilize your pump parts, wash your hands thoroughly and transfer it to freezer bags without it touching your hands. Be sure to label it with the date and time of when you pumped.
Each milk bank may have a different process, some may even pay you. It’s important to do your research and ask questions.
So where can you donate? Here are a few suggestions to get you started.
Mother’s Milk Bank is the oldest operating milk bank in North America and accepts donations all across the country. It’s currently accepting a minimum of 50 ounces and up to 9 months from the day of expression.
The Human Milk Banking Association of North America works with more than 30 non profit milk banks in the United States and Canada that follow rigorous guidelines for safety.
TheMilkBank is a non-profit, community-supported entity. It was established to improve health outcomes for premature and ill infants, foster better health for children and decrease health care expenditures.
TinyTreasuresMilkBank takes your donated milk and allows critically ill and premature infants the chance to benefit from human milk. The donations will be used by Prolacta Bioscience to make human milk-based nutritional products.
If you are in need of milk, each has options to receive milk as well.
What questions do you have about donating? Do you have advice you’d like to share? We’d love to read your comments!

I made sure to make the straps wide to cover a nursing bra!
Another great maxi for summer that also comes with a lift-up flap is our purple tie dye dress. It's 95% cotton and high quality. The nursing flap is held down by a small band of elastic so it doesn't look like a nursing dress! It also comes in regular and petite lengths and is also available in blue!

]]>Although most infants born in 2017 started breastfeeding (84.1%), only 58.3% of infants were breastfeeding at 6 months. ]]>*Pumping helps stimulate production
*Helps increase the amount of milk produced
*Helps create a storage of readily available milk
*Helps moms who struggle with their babies latching to the breast
Breast pumping is a big commitment and takes time and effort to learn how to do it correctly. It is important to support those moms who choose to do it. It is especially important for employers to accommodate those working moms who choose to pump in the work place. By providing a private, clean and comfortable space to pump, employers can greatly help out their employees.
The right clothing can also make a world of difference when pumping. Many moms have found that clothes designed especially for breastfeeding work the best. Discreet horizontal zippers like these make it easy and more comfortable to pump.
You may be wondering how you can observe World Breast Pumping Day. Moms who pump can feel pride on this day for their accomplishments. It is also important that moms share their stories and give advice and encouragement to other moms. You can also reach out and encourage a mom who may be struggling with breastfeeding or pumping.
]]>
Little did the moms who came before her know their messages would make such an impact. Each kind and empathetic note is powerful on its own but there’s also beauty in the power of community - moms supporting other moms. A sea of support that grows note by note, each time a mom stops to put pen to paper.
It’s a good reminder of the power we all have each day to make a difference. We may not always think those little or simple things matter, but they do. Just ask Stephanie, who thanked those “wise strangers” for providing us all with a few kind words of encouragement, including “You are doing great. You are enough. You are life”.

]]>August 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week (WBW), which is one week set aside to promote and support breastfeeding around the world. WBW was developed by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) to call attention to breastfeeding and the actions that we can all do to better support breastfeeding families.
In the U.S. we celebrate the entire month of August as National Breastfeeding Month, which is spearheaded by the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC).
The theme for WBW and National Breastfeeding Month 2021 is Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility. This year’s theme is incredibly important because it helps to shed light on the fact that it truly does take a village to support a breastfeeding family. Breastfeeding families need support from 4 very important angles:
We ALL have a responsibility to support and protect breastfeeding in our families, in our communities, and around the world. What is one thing that you can do to support breastfeeding?
]]>
If your goal is to be a more healthy version of yourself we completely support that!!! And we can help.
Mama, this summer will be over before you know it… so just wear that swimsuit, get in the pool and have FUN! Your baby won’t remember how fit you were, but they will remember your smile.
