The Perfect Little Black Dress - A Review

Who owns a little black dress that you can’t live without?!! I have several in the closet that I have owned for years. Most of them are cocktail dresses that I cannot wear every day…..and if I am being honest I haven’t worn them in years, but I still hold on to them. I’ll give it to you real – with two small children we don’t go anywhere too fancy these days!!

My wish-list for a new little black dress is one that I could wear more often than just to cocktail events or special occasions. I have learned over my 41 years (yes, I am 41 years old) that I need practicality and versatility in clothing. I need clothing pieces that I can dress up and dress down….and that I can get down on the floor with my kids when needed……because we all know that happens!

Maxi dresses are usually my go-to, but they aren’t super practical with small children because they impede me from getting down and crawling on the ground with my 1-year-old. Shorter skirts and dresses lack practicality for the same reason. What I desire are dresses that hit at or slightly below my knees. They also need to have enough give/stretch to them to allow me to get on the floor with kids.

This Sunday I put our youngest in the toddler classroom at church for the first time. I knew that I would likely have to stay in there with him until he was adjusted. I was running through my clothing options in my head trying to figure out what I could wear that would be appropriate for church, would make nursing easy, and would also allow me to get on the floor with him in his classroom if needed. Enter Nursing Queen’s Formal Nursing Dress with Side Ruffles. This dress was exactly what I was looking for!

The dress is the perfect marriage of classy with a touch of comfort and practicality. It has just the perfect details from lovely gold zipper pull in the back to the ruffles down the sides. An added bonus is the completely hidden zipper under the side ruffles, which gives access to your bra clip and breast for nursing in public. Most nursing dresses scream “HELLO I AM A NURSING DRESS”, but not this one! Since the access zippers are hidden this dress can be worn long after your nursing journey is complete and no one would ever know that it is a nursing dress. Talk about practicality! Can I get an amen?

Although the dress appears more formal, it is actually the perfect style to dress down with cute flats and a long necklace. Since we were headed to church, I chose to wear this dress with my mother’s vintage watch necklace from the 1960’s and a pair of cute wedges. The dress is made of 95% polyester and 5% spandex, which allows it to give making it perfect for chasing my toddler around. Additionally, the dress is lined, which is an added bonus!

The only caveat is that it runs small. Thankfully, the company does warn the buyer their website. I normally wear a size 14 and according to Nursing Queen’s website I was told to order an XL in this particular dress, which is what I would normally wear. It is definitely snug-fitting (more equivalent to a size large than an XL), but I am okay with that right now considering that I am still dropping baby weight. But if your situation is different than mine I would urge buyers to size up on this piece.

Overall this dress gets a 4 on Mammary Brand's Boobable Scale and that is only due to the sizing. If the sizing was normal and it wasn’t as snug fitting it would have a perfect score because the quality and attention to detail on this dress cannot be beaten. Sizing- Fit Quiz!

NQ size chart

All of our designs fit true-to-size with a relaxed fit (which compensate for extra weight and a larger chest). Most of them also have an A-line fit, which means they fit across the chest/shoulders but flow away from the body so your waist and hip measurements don't matter.

Our sizes are similar to maternity-wear: order your pre-baby size. If you're between sizes, size down. Typically, the best way to determine your size is to follow your pre-baby size in numbers on the chart (4/6, 8/10, etc).

Plus Sizes: We follow a standard U.S. plus chart. Our plus sizes range from 1X-3X. NOTE: An XXL (in misses) is a size 1X in plus sizing.
